In 2019, a group of farmers and food advocates across New Zealand noticed the same pattern. Consumers wanted to support regenerative agriculture, but the infrastructure didn't exist to connect them efficiently with local producers.
Farmers markets served some needs, but required producers to spend valuable weekend hours selling rather than farming. Online platforms existed, but most consolidated produce from multiple farms in ways that obscured source transparency and added unnecessary handling.
We built Dawn Spark to solve a specific problem: how to create direct, transparent relationships between regenerative farms and the households that want to support them, without adding logistical burden to already stretched farming operations.
Every farm in our network undergoes assessment of their soil health practices, biodiversity integration, and chemical input policies. We prioritize producers using compost systems, cover cropping, and rotational grazing where livestock is involved.
You always know which farm your food comes from. Our distribution model maintains clear attribution rather than mixing produce from multiple sources into anonymous boxes.
Producers receive 70-75% of the retail price, significantly higher than wholesale channels. This allows them to invest in soil improvements and sustainable infrastructure rather than constantly operating on thin margins.
Most items move directly from field to collection point with only one intermediate touch. This preserves quality and reduces the carbon footprint associated with multiple warehouse transfers.
We work with 43 verified regenerative farms across the North and South Islands, from Northland vegetable growers to Canterbury grain producers. The network includes specialist growers focusing on heritage varieties, mixed operations balancing livestock and crops, and orchardists working with perennial systems.
Distribution operates through 17 regional collection points, chosen to minimize travel time for most households while keeping logistics manageable for farm operations.
This system isn't perfect, and we don't claim otherwise. We're constantly working with farmers and members to reduce packaging waste, optimize delivery routes, and improve accessibility for households in more remote areas.
Feedback mechanisms are built into the system. When something isn't working, we want to know quickly so we can adjust.
